The short answer
Temple is the bigger, more suburban neighbor to Belton, with about 93,000 people, Baylor Scott & White and the VA hospital, the big box stores, and direct I‑35 access that makes commuting to Waco or North Austin easier. The catch most people miss: a Temple address can be in Belton ISD, Temple ISD, Troy ISD or Academy ISD, so always check the school zone for the exact home.
Belton or Temple? My honest take
I live in Belton, and I end up in Temple almost every day. The two towns crisscross so much that the line between them is easy to miss.
Here's how I explain the difference:
- Temple has the shopping. Kohl's, Target, Sam's Club and Aldi are all in Temple. In Belton you have restaurants, Walmart and H‑E‑B, but for most other errands you're driving to Temple, Harker Heights or Killeen.
- Temple is easier for commuters. It sits right on I‑35, so the drive up to Waco or down to North Austin, Round Rock and Leander is a straight shot. It can save you a good 15 to 20 minutes compared with some parts of Belton.
- Belton feels like a small town. Temple is more urban and suburban. Belton is much smaller, and you feel it.
- For my own family, I chose Belton ISD. Belton ISD has two high schools, Belton High and Lake Belton High. Temple ISD has one 6A high school, Temple High School, which just finished a big remodel of its football and athletics facilities. And plenty of Temple addresses are actually zoned to Belton ISD, which is one reason the neighborhoods below are so popular.
Neither answer is wrong. It comes down to your commute, your errands and what kind of town you want to come home to.
Why do people choose Temple?
- The hospitals. Baylor Scott & White and the VA hospital are two of the biggest employers in the area, and living close to them makes a long shift easier.
- BNSF Railway is another major employer in the area.
- I‑35 access for anyone commuting north to Waco or south toward Round Rock and Austin.
- Shopping and dining close to home.
What is downtown Temple like?
Downtown Temple has more going on than people expect. The Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum in the old Santa Fe Depot is a local favorite, and Whistle Stop Park is one of the coolest parks in town.
A few places I'd send you:
- Cheeves Bros. Steakhouse for a steak night
- Nori, a newer sushi spot right next to the Arcadia Theater
- La Dalat for Vietnamese
- The newly redone Arcadia Theater downtown
- The new Santa Fe Community Market, held monthly downtown
Which Temple neighborhoods should I look at?
Legacy RanchOn the south side, with larger lots and quality new construction. John Houston Custom Homes builds here, mostly spec homes, but you can also go semi custom with them.
Valor EstatesLarger lots, some up to about an acre, with a mix of custom homes from different builders, not just one. Valor Estates is its own neighborhood, separate from Legacy Ranch.
Wildflower Country ClubGolf course living in a more central part of Temple. You can join as a social member or a golf member, and the club hosts lots of events.
The Groves at Lakewood Ranch and Hills of WestwoodBoth have Temple addresses and are zoned to Belton ISD. The main builders are Omega and Kiella Homes, and both neighborhoods are nearly built out. Lots are on the smaller side, usually under a quarter acre, but both have community pools, which can be a big plus. Part of Hills of Westwood is gated.
Bella TerraA newer neighborhood built in phases since 2020, mostly by Carothers Executive Homes. Homes are typically about 2,100 to 2,600 square feet, and lots in the newer phases run about a quarter to a third of an acre. Check the school zone by address; listings show a mix of districts.
New construction in Temple
- D.R. Horton: Oak Ridge and Blackland Ranch
- Omega: Hillside Village and Northpointe
- John Houston Custom Homes: Legacy Ranch
Builders often offer incentives like help with closing costs or a lower rate, so new construction is worth comparing even if you're leaning toward a resale.
Which school district is a Temple address in?
This is the most important thing to know about buying in Temple: the mailing address doesn't tell you the school district.
A home with a Temple address can be in:

What this means: Temple has a lot of inventory and a lot of new construction, which gives buyers room to compare and negotiate. Homes are taking a little over two months to sell, so pricing right matters for sellers.

What are the honest tradeoffs?
- The lakes are closer to Belton. If being near Belton Lake or Stillhouse Hollow Lake matters to you, Belton is the better fit.
- Less hiking and lake life. Temple has a really good park system, but fewer hiking trails and less boating than you'll find on the Belton side.
- City property taxes run higher. For 2026, the City of Temple's tax rate is 75 cents per $100 of value, compared with about 56 cents for the City of Belton. On a $350,000 home, that's roughly $650 more a year in city taxes alone. Your total bill also depends on the school district and other taxing units, so I'll compare the real tax bill on any home you're considering.
- It doesn't have the same small town feel. Temple is a bigger city, and it feels like one.
What's changing in Temple?
Downtown is coming back to life. The Arcadia Theater was just redone, the new Santa Fe Community Market has started bringing people downtown every month, and more housing is going in as historic buildings get renovated.
The other big news is data centers. We've noticed a lot of them popping up around Temple. Meta opened a roughly $1.2 billion AI data center in Temple in July 2026, and Rowan Digital Infrastructure is building a 700 acre data center campus in Temple with completion targeted for 2027. These projects bring construction jobs and new investment, and some residents have raised questions about power, water and heat. I'll keep this section updated as the projects move forward.
